Home Security Wherever you Live
It is thought the well-known adage “An Englishman’s home is his castle” has its origins in a 17th-century legal judgement when the then Attorney General Sir Edward Coke said, “The house of every one is to him as his castle and fortress.” This established the principle that a person’s home was a private sanctuary, protected from unauthorised entry, symbolising the idea that residential security and protection are rights everyone should enjoy.
Homes—whether a castle in Scotland, a terraced house in London, a flat in Paris, or a rural estate in the Cotswolds—should be sanctuaries for the people living in them.
People still live in castles in the UK and across Europe, but it’s more about the metaphor. Accepted that as a timeless promise, whether for a 17th-century farm worker barring his cottage door or a modern homeowner contracting out CCTV and monitoring services, the “castle” stands for privacy, safety, and access control wherever you live.
In this blog post, we will discuss how this all translates to the modern era and how a security contractor can offer a range of security guarding and technological residential security services to ensure that the home/castle metaphor can continue to endure 5 centuries on.
Burglary is on the Rise
Burglary Definition
Burglary means breaking in and stealing. To be precise, gaining unauthorised access to a building or other premises for theft or intent of theft — with or without forcing locks, doors, windows, etc.
The Statistics
The UK Office of National Statistics stated in their 2024 report that after 20 years of trending downward, burglaries were again on the rise. For the year ending March 2024, police recorded 266,489 burglaries in England and Wales. This follows 250,690 in 2022 (a 7% increase from 235,280 in 2021), showing a clear upward trend post-COVID. The ONS notes that residential burglaries specifically rose as restrictions eased, with economic pressures (e.g., the cost-of-living crisis) potentially driving crime.
Analysis of Eurostat 2022 data (an aggregation of Eurostat’s underlying data) concludes that around 1.1 million burglaries took place across the EU, with countries like France and Spain mirroring UK trends. Without specific and accurate data, but analysing trends, we estimate 50–60% of Europe’s 220 million households (110–132 million) are underprotected when it comes to security provision.
There are many theories about the cause of the rise in burglary statistics, but the simplest and likely the most accurate explanation is an increase in the levels of financial hardship and poverty.
Residential Security Services in Detail
1. Static Residential Security Guards
Admittedly, static guards may not be the answer in many situations. But let’s consider a remote luxury estate in the Scottish Highlands or any remote rural setting anywhere in the UK or Europe.
The property is likely to be miles from the nearest police station with a slow or nonexistent emergency response. A static guard is not just your first line of defence should an incident occur; they’re also a visible deterrent that controls access and stops an attempted breach from happening in the first place. Prevention is better (and a lot less expensive) than cure.
When alarms sound or movement is detected on CCTV, you’re guaranteed an instant response. Technology can fail—Wi-Fi drops out and batteries die—but with a static guard protecting your home, the human element remains predictable and steadfast.

2. Mobile Patrols
Mobile patrols often succeed where static guards are impractical. They enhance the perception of security and instant response. In sprawling housing areas—like the post-war estates in Leeds, the Banlieues in Paris, or even new builds in Milton Keynes—unpredictable patrol routes and schedules keep burglars guessing. Burglars hate the unexpected and astute homeowners, housing associations, and local authorities are making full use of the deterrent effect of a mobile patrol. With 63% of UK homes—over 18 million—lacking basic security, they’re a lifeline for the underprotected.
Technology gives patrols an edge in 2025. GPS tracks their routes while mobile apps allow for instant reporting. Some security contractors are beginning to deploy drones for a cost-effective aerial patrol of remote luxury estates. For a Provençal villa or Highland retreat, where police are an hour away and may not even attend, this layered approach is effective for prevention. Example: A guard carrying out a property security inspection reports back on a faulty light, a loose window, or a dodgy lock, enabling the client to put things right before anything untoward happens.
3. Vacant Property Security
One of our patrols in Cornwall spotted an open window and flashes of torchlight and was able to liaise with the local Police to catch the offenders in the act. The property was not one we were contracted to monitor and turned out to be a holiday home. A grateful property owner later became a client.
Patrols are also useful for protecting vacant properties. The Council Taxbase 2024 notes that, in England alone, excluding exempt properties, 502,000 dwellings were recorded as empty for council tax purposes as of 15 September 2024 and 280,000 dwellings recorded as second homes for council tax. Cost-effective and adaptable, mobile patrols suit housing associations under budgetary pressure or absentee owners unable to check their properties regularly.
Of course, burglary is not the only risk, security guards stop squatters or vandals and help to ensure that empty properties dont deteriorate further.
4. Security Technology
UK and European homeowners are adopting technology like smart locks, AI-powered CCTV with facial recognition, and motion-sensor lighting. These integrate with smartphone and watch apps for real-time alerts—perfect for a busy Londoner or a rural homeowner far from neighbours.
Security contractors like Titan offer easy connection of security technology like alarms, sensors, and CCTV to their online monitoring and alert platforms, ensuring that alerts are received instantly and a rapid response is initiated. The ability to react in real time no matter the time of day is a benefit that transforms CCTV from an evidence-gathering tool into a fully-fledged deterrent capable of stopping crime in its tracks.
Far from being an expensive deterrent afforded to higher-income homeowners, competition in the sector and advances in manufacturing capability have brought the price down to an affordable level for everyone.
It’s worth considering that over-reliance on tech with its potential for exposure to power outages, Wi-Fi dropouts, or hacking risks is why, from a security contractor perspective, we often advocate for a hybrid approach combining technology with human oversight in the form of central control rooms and security guards.
5. Gated Communities
You might look on gated communities as modern fortresses where residents enjoy safety in numbers and a coordinated approach to security. Across the UK and Europe, the concept is spreading. From Surrey’s St George’s Hill to Lisbon’s Quinta do Lago. developments have been driven by wealth gaps, a rapid rise in immigration and expanding crime fears.
In the UK, gated communities have surged since the 1990s. According to research, there may be as many as 1000, particularly in London’s wealthy boroughs and in rural retreats like Cheshire. Europe has a fair share too—Spain’s Costa del Sol boasts many sprawling gated estates, while Stockholm’s suburbs and Germany’s urban edges see gated communities and security-monitored apartment complexes rise in popularity.
A typical security setup would incorporate technology and the human element: resident entry could be controlled by pin code, mobile app or biometric access, while a guard mans the entrance, screening visitors and logging non-resident entry like delivery vans and undertaking security patrols.

6. Concierge Security
The concierge/security blend is a service that has its origins in the leisure and hotel industry but has been taken on and adapted for the residential security sector. It suits any environment with an entrance lobby, reception, or foyer. It provides licensed security personnel with additional training in guest and visitor assistance, plus emergency crisis management skills. Environments in which the service thrives include:
- Apartment complexes
- Gated communities
- Halls of residence and other accommodation attached to universities and colleges
Apartment Complexes:
- In large apartment buildings, the concierge/security blend provides 24/7 coverage, managing access, handling deliveries, and responding to resident needs.
- They can also enforce building rules and regulations, ensuring a safe living environment that benefits residents collectively.
Gated Communities:
- Gated communities often prioritise security and exclusivity. The concierge/security blend reinforces these values by controlling access, monitoring perimeter security, and providing a helpful and personalised service to residents.
- They can verify resident and guest entry, and monitor for any suspicious activity.
Halls of Residence (Universities and Colleges):
- This service helps to maintain a safe and secure environment in student accommodation while also providing support and assistance to students.
- Guards can manage access, handle student enquiries, and respond to emergencies
- They can also control noise levels, and help to enforce the rules of the halls of residence.
